Consultant Case Study
Following his studies at RMC, Dan
MacWhirter had a 10-year career as
a General Manager in McDonalds in
five Kingston stores, leading a staff
of 600 generating $10 million/year
in sales. He then managed a number
of Canada Trust branches, spending
6 years in Ottawa and 12 in Kingston.
Through his career with Canada Trust
and subsequently TD Canada Trust,
Dan has received recognition for his
focus on providing exemplary customer
service.
Dan's passion in life is helping
others. He has demonstrated this passion
through his active involvement with
Rotary for over 18 years and for making
a difference in the lives of his clients.
"Employers and managers coach
me for themselves; professional success
coaches coach me for me."
In his quest for a successful career
and a fun life, which includes two
young children and his wife, Dan left
the bank and found the career which
feeds his need to help others, resulting
in helping himself. After a short
time as a consultant, however, accepting
the position as Divisional Director
at Investors Group in Kingston, with
his background, was a logical move.
He is able to help others embark on
a career that satisfies their need
to help people.
Being a manager again, however, has
its challenges. How can he regain
that balance between a successful
career and a fun personal and family
life, including coaching competitive
basketball, taking his teams to higher
levels and many tournaments?
Dan has learned much from the many
leaders he's had in his careers. These
leaders knew that by helping Dan succeed,
they succeed. Dan uses many of these
principles in helping his recruits
and consultants succeed.
With a success coach, however, Dan
helps himself succeed.
Through coaching, Dan is able to
explore options to make life more
manageable and to not lose the fun.
Using his coach as a "sounding
board" he's able to
- be more connected with what his
business is,
- better understand and identify
the challenges he's facing, and
by talking about them he sifts through
- the old beliefs,
- the inner dialogue,
- the "human conditioning"
... and takes himself out of his
comfort zone where he dares to do
what's necessary to eliminate the
tolerations that chew up a lot of
energy.
For Dan, coaching is "self-improvement".
