Newsletter - September 23, 2008 Continuing education is a big component in the success of our businesses. Sadly when I ask people about their continuing education system they refer only to the “skills training” component of their trade … or worse yet, only for their employees. This includes construction trades, but it equally includes every trade … my trade being professional coaching, right? With all the flurry of new possibilities, turned into reality, and the resulting excitement throughout this entire 2008, thus far, I neglected to mention my joy in MLJ Coaching & Consulting having turned 5 years old (!) on the day after Labour Day! This summer I have invested a lot of time and a considerable amount of money in continuing education for me, personally, and for MLJ CC. Funny enough, what I’m writing about today, however, comes from someone in whose work I invested numerous years ago. As with all education, some of his stuff worked for me and some didn’t A recent newsletter discusses a topic I’ve brought up for years, to help contractors dare to act on their intuition and invest in The Trade-Contractors’ Business School when they know it’s right for them. But My Business is Different, so many people tell themselves … and me, protecting themselves from their F.E.A.R. (False Evidence Appearing Real). Every person who’s attended one of my workshop/seminars has heard me explain that those who believe “but my business is different,” are absolutely correct; just like the downstairs in our house is different. At the end of the day it’s still the foundation of our house, it’s still made with concrete … it’s still a basement like that found in every other house, despite the fact that we call it “the downstairs.” It’s different, but it’s still a basement. To repeat the words of Dan Kennedy (The “Millionaire Maker” through his “No B.S.” products & writings): Fools stay stuck in the very limiting “But my Business is Different” box, thereby negating the value of 99% of every successful strategy, example, model they see or are presented with. … have Bilbo Baggin’s (The Hobbit) attitude: not interested in adventures – they make you late for dinner. No B.S. Time Management is a Dan Kennedy book I read a few years ago, and referred to in a newsletter, even. I was surprised at the number of strategies and systems we had in common when it comes to better managing our own time. He has a different style, of course, and even his writing isn’t for everyone, but reading his article this month tells me we’re still reading from the same page. Are you one of those “But my Business is Different” people? If so, you truly are limiting yourself. No two businesses are identical, nor is your business any different than any other. Continuing education for you, the entrepreneur, is the answer. We need to continually educate ourselves because standing still on the business development track, while putting out fires on a constant minute-by-minute day-by-day basis, sets us so far back in the race that, as the old saying goes, “we think we’re first” (because we see no one else around us). But as entrepreneurs we know bloody well that we're not first. We know it, we feel it ... but we still fear acting on our intuition, which tells us precisely what we need to do to get better results. Consider no longer. You’ve considered enough already. Decide on which form of continuing education in which you are investing to develop yourself and improve / strengthen / grow your business. Act by purchasing the product or service today and immediately put the chunks of time into your agenda to be sure that it’s not yet another binder that sits on top of your filing cabinet waiting for you to miraculously get a round 'tuit'. Time-Management is the number one challenge for every business owner I’ve met in the last 5 years (since having a professional coaching business).
