This has become a hot topic, lately,
and especially as it relates to mental
safety. It can't be ignored,
yet many of us aren't sure exactly
what it is.
How safe is the
mental wellness of your staff and
managers at your workplace?
One major symptom of a mentally unsafe
environment is absenteeism. Another
symptom is "presenteeism".
This is where the "bodies"
show up for work, but the "ownership"
and care for the position and the
job are elsewhere. Even physical safety
issues can be symptoms of a mentally
unsafe environment. When someone isn't
plugged into what (s)he's doing, careless
actions occur and accidents happen.
One-fifth (1/5) of employee disability
claims today are related to impaired
mental health. It is predicted that
within just a few years, mental health
will be the number one disability
- surpassing today's leading disability
which is cardio-vascular disease.
Civil, respectful workplaces currently
incur between 15% and 33% fewer mental
health disability claims. Some of
the mental illnesses which are commonplace
are:
- anxiety
- depression
- burnout
However, links are now being made
from mentally unsafe workplaces to
diseases such as:
- cardio-vascular.
- infectious diseases.
- some cancers.
- prescription drug abuse.
Many of our clients were unaware
of the level of mental safety their
staff perceive their workplace to
have, though absenteeism is definitely
an issue in every
industry.
Managers and/or company owners who
are coached by Lynne create systems
to alleviate themselves of many of
the tasks that can be completed by
others. In so doing, staff training
is more frequent, communication improves
and the staff's influence and control
over their tasks increases, which
has a very positive effect on the
employees' mental health. The employer
or manager (our client) is happier,
which delights his/her family. The
staff is happier, which delights their
families. Stress
is reduced as a natural occurrence.
What does it cost your company for
absenteeism?
What would the
return on your investment in coaching
be if each member of your staff took
even just one fewer sick day this
year?
